Brad Sayles
Senior Recording Engineer Producer / Host: Music from the Movies
A Composer since his early teens, Brad Sayles has come to fulfill his promise by displaying his talents on many different sides of the medium of music; both live and recorded. His 2006 surround sound installation for sculptor Jo Ann Fleischhauer's Parasol Project has given Houstonians an aural springboard from which to jump into the exciting visual components of the historic Blanche Foley house. His scoring work on the independent films Echoes of Innocence and The Bracelet of Bordeaux have brought music of both haunting beauty and uproarious fun to the movie theater, while his energetic score for the Houston Public Television special "Art is All Around Us" was nominated in 2006 for an Emmy. He has received the Silver Telly, the Gold Aurora, and the Worldfest Gold Special Jury Awards for his scores.
Brad has received commissions from the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Houston Chamber Orchestra, Richard Nunemaker, and HPR Chamber Ensemble for compositions of many different styles. He is the 2003 and 2007 first laureate of the Louisa Stude Sarofim Composition Competition for his chamber suite New England Journey and his dramatic voice and chamber ensemble piece The Lily. Houston Public Radio benefits from Brad's musical talents in myriad ways as well. He has created the music for the last four Engines of Our Ingenuity CDs with host and author John Lienhard. His composition Echoes of Invention was the first of its kind to bring Dr. Lienhard's voice and musical accompaniment found on these discs to a concert hall.
Brad also serves as chief recording engineer for the Houston NPR affiliate. There, he oversees the major in house recording projects produced by KUHF and serves as the audio producer for the Houston Symphony Broadcasts. Over the past six years, Brad has engineered over a half dozen recordings for the Symphony, including the Koch release of Stravinsky and Bartok, as well as "The Gift" made in partnership with Lakewood Church.
Brad is equally at home editing sound for film, prompting Academy Award nominated sound editor Allen Robert Murray to hail Brad's expertise as "incredible" for his work on the movie Space Cowboys. Brad has served as the supervising sound editor for one feature film — Echoes of innocence and several corporate and non commercial productions.
He received his Masters in Music Composition from the University of Houston studying with Robert Nelson, and his Bachelors of Arts in Telecommunication from Michigan State University.
