Downtown Post Office Could Close

As Laurie Johnson reports, the postal service wants to consolidate operations to save money so they're asking for public input on closing the facility. listen now: Houston's main post office, at 401 Franklin, is the central processing facility for the city. The U.S. Postal Service also operates a large processing center in North Houston, and the two facilities could be consolidated. Spokeswoman Dionne Montague says the downtown office is not as busy as it used to be. "We're finding that more and more trucks are leaving half empty. We're not utilizing our equipment to capacity. We have employees that are not being utilized for their entire shift. So we have resources, we have equipment that is being under-utilized." A study of the two facilities supports consolidation, but Montague says it's contingent on selling the downtown property. "We want everyone to know that given the economic realities with the decline in mail volume and decline in revenue, the postal service must take action to match its resources with mail volume." Even so, Montague says no final decision has been made and postal officials want to hear from the public regarding the issue. They're holding a public meeting tonight in the Ley Student Center at Rice University from 6-8pm. Laurie Johnson.
