Rod Rice became fascinated with radio at an early age, while sitting on his Grandfather’s lap listening to his "programs" on the big Emerson Radio. From an early age, working in radio was the only job he ever really wanted.

After three years in the Army, Rod pursued his dream at his first radio job in the coal regions of eastern Pennsylvania at WPAM in Pottsville. Since that time he has worked at several radio stations with many different formats. Rod’s done everything there is to do one the air including being a “disc-jockey,” call-in talk show host, live interviews and of course, news reporting. He even did sportscasts at one station even though he knew very little about any sport other than baseball.

That led to his first news anchoring job in 1984. Rod moved to Houston in 1991 and came to Houston Public Radio for the first time in 1998. He considers himself very lucky to have received an opportunity to return to KUHF in July of 2003. Even though the majority of his career has been in commercial radio, Rod has always been a fan of Public Radio, having listened to All Things Considered from its earliest days. He was a listener and supporter of Houston Public Radio even before he came to work here.

Rod has been honored by several organizations for excellence in journalism, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Director’s Association.

In addition to his news reporting duties, Rod is the local morning news anchor for Morning Edition, heard every weekday from 5 to 9 am on Houston Public Radio, 88.7FM.
