KUHF Houston Public Radio:
- is licensed to the University of Houston, but is fully self-supported through gifts from individuals, corporations, other non-profits and foundations in the greater Houston area.
- is a fully professional radio station, certified by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and is a member of National Public Radio (NPR), American Public Media (APM) and Public Radio International (PRI).
- employs 52 full-time staff in the areas of broadcast production and on-air operations; broadcast journalism and reporting; information technology and Web design; engineering; fundraising and development; marketing and business administration.
KUHF's format is:
- news and information, from NPR, the BBC and other sources, including local and regional news from the KUHF newsroom.
- classical music and fine arts
- news and classical music both share the 88.7 FM channel
- news and classical both broadcast separate 24/7 programs on HD Digital and Internet Radio.
- heard by over 350,000 listeners throughout the Gulf Coast region each week.
The KUHF broadcast facility:
- is located on the 3rd floor of the Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting at the University of Houston.
- transmits on 88.7 FM with 100,000 watts and on HD Digital with 6,000 watts on channels 1, 2 and 3.
- streams its programming world-wide on Internet radio stations KUHF News, KUHF Classical and KUHF Global.
- provides program streams to the iPhone and other Smart Phone applications.
The KUHF budget:
- $8.76 million in FY 2010
- 93% of that total comes from gifts from the community
- of that 93%, 45% ($3.97 million) comes from business and corporate program underwriting and 48% ($4.19 million) from individual member contributions.
- federal assistance through the CPB Community Service Grant is 5% of budget, or $460,000.
- no financial support is received from the University of Houston or from the State of Texas.
KUHF structure:
- The Association for Community Broadcasting (ACB) is a separate 501.c.3 organization whose purpose is to raise money for both KUHF Houston Public Radio and KUHT Houston PBS.
- Otherwise, KUHF Radio and KUHT Television (HoustonPBS) are separate operations, with separate staffs and budgets.
- A gift or pledge to KUHF does not benefit KUHT, and vice versa.
