ConocoPhillips Marks UH Petroleum Engineering Building Dedication with $1 Million Donation

June 29, 2011

by: Andrew Schneider

The University of Houston dedicated a new home for its petroleum engineering program this morning. ConocoPhillips, whose name the new building bears, marked the occasion with a multi-million-dollar donation to the school. Andrew Schneider reports.

The ConocoPhillips Petroleum Engineering Building is the first to open in the University of Houston’s new Energy Research Park, just south of the main campus.

“And I keep telling ConocoPhillips, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you,’ and I hope you will be our good luck charm, because we have thirteen more buildings here, and I want to see an energy company’s name on every single one of those buildings.”

University president Renu Khator hails the opening as a down payment on the university’s commitment to meet the workforce needs of Houston’s energy industry.

Ronald Harrell, chair UH Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board; Renu Khator, UH President; Ramanan Krishnamoorti, chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Carin Knickel, ConocoPhillips vice president for human resources, echoes the sentiment. She says the industry needs to diversify its workforce as it faces a wave of retirements.

“Successfully managing our business around this changing face of talent is something that ConocoPhillips and, frankly, all of the energy industry needs to get very good at right away.”

To that end, Conoco is pledging a million dollars to the university this year. It says it will follow this with a second million-dollar gift next year and a third in 2013.
